Unfortunately, my Mom was not comfortable being recorded. However, I was able to record by hand our interview and the discussion had.
Me: "Why did you decide to give me my first phone in fifth grade?" Mom: "After talking with your father, we decided that you would be walking to and home from school in fifth grade and in middle school so we would feel more comfortable if you had a phone you could use in emergency." Me: "Did you ever feel as though I was too attached to my phone?" Mom: "There were times during Middle School and even High School when I felt as though the texting and social media use was getting out of hand. But you remember the deal, if your grades were not up to par all cell phone privileges were taken away. No exceptions." Me: "Why were you okay with me having things such as text messaging and AIM (instant messenger) but not comfortable with things like Facebook and MySpace?" Mom: "It really came down to whatever me and your father were able to try our best to control. We trusted you all enough to use your phones appropriately and we would even monitor who you were texting when we could. Facebook and MySpace opened the door for strangers and even predators to be in contact with you. We also were not that familiar with the sights." Me: "Okay last question, how do you feel as though technology has changed society?" Mom: *laughs* "You already know how I feel about this. I absolutely hate it! No one talks on the phone anymore, Christ! No one even talks in person anymore! I hate the digital era and wish that iPhone's had never been invented."
