FINALLY! A break from the teen romcoms I have been drowning you with! The next movie I have selected as part of the must see Netflix 90’s is Pulp Fiction. Quite the exact opposite of a romantic teen comedy, actually. This movie is filled with suspense, action, and thrilling scenes that will leave you wanting more (and to be apart of the action). I love this movie for the dialect, characters, and overall aesthetic of the film. You cannot beat the dynamic duo of John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, playing Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield. The two hitman begin the film in the apartment of kids who stole their bosses briefcase. With intimidation and the use of their guns they scare the kids to their core, while also eating their burgers and having a sip of their soda. The two provide the viewer with senseless comedy during their car rides, my personal favorite is the talk about a Quarter Pounder in France. Vincent remarking that the funniest part about Europe is the “little differences”. "Alright, well you can walk into a movie theater in Amsterdam and buy a beer. And I don't mean just like in no paper cup, I'm talking about a glass of beer. And in Paris, you can buy a beer at McDonald's. And you know what they call a, uh, a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?" The two are paired perfectly and make being a hitman all that much more glamorous. After retrieving the briefcase their boss, Marsellus Wallace, the scariest mob boss you never want to meet. Wallace asks Vincent to take his wife out while he is out of town, for Vincent this seems like a rather intimidating and strange request. Take the bosses wife out? The mob boss that could kill me at any minute? Introducing my FAVORITE character in the whole movie, Mia Wallace. When I spoke of aesthetics before, Mia can be credited with majority of this. Her overall poise and demeanor is intriguing and sexy, you want to know more about her with every word she says. Vincent has no idea what he is getting himself into as he arrives to pick Mia up, a night full of dancing, heroin, and almost killing the bosses wife. Yeah…. You could say that things escalate quickly! However, this chain of events includes one of my favorite scenes Mia and Vincent performing in the dance competition. Travolta actually spoke with a recovering heroin addict while filming his role as Vincent, a heroine addict. The addict a friend of director Quentin Tarantino, gave the advice to get drunk off of tequila and lay in a hot pool. He said that this would be the closest feeling you could experience of being on heroin, without actually doing the drug. Travolta actually tried this out one night in his hot tub accompanied by his wife. So, after almost killing your mobster bosses wife, how could their be any more action? Oh you are in for a treat! This is just the beginning! We now meet boxer Butch Coolidge, older than most of his components, he is paid by Wallace to lose his fight. That is, until he accidentally kills his opponent causing him to flee town. While trying to save his own life from Wallace who wants so desperately to kill him, we are blessed with the most action packed edge of your seat worthy scenes. This movie has made it into my top 5 Netflix 90’s for the carefully crafted plot. The four unrelated events that somehow weave their way together leaves no time for you to take your eyes off of the screen. Tarantino incorporates the perfect amount of humor, action, and suspense. I guarantee you’ll find yourself watching the film over and over again to see if there was anything you missed. You may even find something hidden as there are many subliminal messages and subtle cues. Pulp Fiction is a masterpiece that deserves all 2 hours and 34 minutes of your time! So open those laptops and turn on your tv to stream Pulp Fiction on Netflix, I can hardly even believe you can stream such a classic WHENEVER you want as MANY times as you want! XOXO, happy watching!!
I know you can be overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed, but can you ever just be whelmed?4/20/2017 Next is one of my absolute favorite movies, and it’s on Netflix!?! That’s right, this movie is the teen heart throb that you have been searching for, a 90’s masterpiece! 10 Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger is next on my list of binge worthy Netflix 90’s. Despite the obvious reasons why you should watch this movie, young Heath Ledger in all of his gorgeousness, this movie is adapted from Shakespeare’s “The Taming of The Shrew” play. Pretty cool right !? Much more than JUST a romcom, but let’s all admit we love a nice teenage love story (even if you’ll never show it). Bad. Ass. Two words that describe the main character Katarina Stratford. One of her more famous lines, “How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways.” There’s that Shakespeare! Katarina is a rebellious senior who does not take shit from ANYONE that crosses her path, and she’ll make sure to let you know. An outsider to the social scene at Padua High School, Kat does not follow conformity and voices her opinion about feminism whenever she can. A bad ass woman speaking freely about feminism in high school!? Are you intrigued yet!? The plot of the story follows Kat, and her sister Bianca. When a new boy in school falls in love first sight with Bianca, he attempts to do anything in his power to break their father’s strict no dating policy. Well that is, no dating for Bianca unless Katarina has a date too. COMMENCE FIND KAT A DATE WITHOUT HER KNOWING! Cameron, the new boy at school, receives help from the pretty boy jock, Joey Donner who will hire and pay someone to take Kat out making Bianca now dateable! The things you will do for a date in high school….. However, they have not hired just anyone, they have hired bad boy Patrick Verona. Rumored to have once ate a live duck and set a state trooper on fire. Not to mention Patrick, played by Heath Ledger, makes being bad so DAMN fine. This is where the movie takes a spin away from your stereotypical teen comedy. As I Patrick attempts to win over Kat’s heart, while being paid to do so, we see her hard exterior begin to deteriorate. She is now becoming less cynical and more optimistic of Patrick, less judgement and more compassion. Okay, okay…. Where is this going you may be thinking? Is Kat going to fall in love with Patrick? Will Cameron date the popular and beautiful Bianca Stratford? SPOILER ALERT! After much persistence and romantic notions Kat finally agrees to attend prom with Patrick, something she had sworn off for the longest time. Bianca, who was to originally attend with pretty boy Joey, decides to attend prom with Cameron because of information about Joey she learns from her sister. While at prom, Joey who still is infuriated with Bianca’s decision makes the arrangement between him and Patrick to date Kat public. As you can assume, Kat is devastated (and as viewers we all are too). The ending of this movie is truly what I like the most about the whole film. The director has done such a good job bringing everything together in a predictable yet unpredictable way. While giving you a scene that will break your heart yet have you wanting more every single time. Kat reads an assignment in front of the class, they were required to create their own William Shakespearean sonnet. Her poem titled “10 Things I Hate About You” dedicated to Patrick of course. AH! Everything comes together! More Shakespeare! What’s not to love!? “But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.” Admitting her obvious love for Patrick, while also becoming teary eyed in class, your heart will break into a thousand pieces. Believe it or not, this scene, which I have included below, only took one time to shoot. Kat’s tears being unplanned and the almost perfect break in her voice a product of perfect timing. After confessing her love in class, Patrick surprises Kat with her very own guitar purchased with all of the money he made from Joey. The two end up happily together and Bianca begins dating Cameron. So now that I have gave you the complete run down, I hope you can understand how this movie has landed into my top 5 Netflix 90’s. A badass girl power movie, filled with romance and twists and turns in every direction. This movie is for any hopeless romantic, proud feminist, and even if you hate love, you will love 10 Things I hate About you. Now go turn on your TV’s, laptops, tablets, phones, whatever you chose to stream Netflix on and watch this movie!!! You can thank me later, xoxo happy watching!
For those of you who do not understand the meaning of my title, I URGE you to continue reading. For those of you that do, you’re in the right place. You may be asking yourself why I chose this as the first movie to discuss from all of the 90’s movies currently on Netflix? If you are, I hope you are left with the same love I have for this film or even better, rushing to your bed to put Netflix on and enjoy this classic!! Now let’s begin! CLUELESS. Written and directed by Amy Heckerling this movie easily falls into my must watch Netflix 90’s. Filled with comedy, love, friendship, and most importantly, the ultimate struggles of a Beverly Hills High School student. Heckerling’s masterpiece follows the story of a teenage girl, Cher, growing up in Beverly Hills living an extremely lavish and luxurious lifestyle. As we are following Cher’s life we are introduced to her friends, classmates, peers, and most importantly crushes. The storyline follows the complicated day to day struggles of teens growing up and attending school without a clue into an actual real life problem. The movie is filled with hilarious dialogue and events as Heckerling pokes fun at the “Valley girl” stereotype. Heckerling actually sat in on a few classes at Beverly Hills High to absorb the language and create an authentic script. She even noted that Cher’s famous “Ugh, as if!” line came from the lesbian population of the school, their “catch phrase” if you will. The characters use of such unintelligent and absurd vocabulary makes the events all that much funnier. Check out this link of the 30 best lines! Still not convinced? Another reason for this movie falling into my favorite Netflix 90’s is for the drop dead fabulous 90’s fashion we are missing out on. Plaid, plaid, plaid, I can’t get enough of it! It is reported that 53 different types of plaid were used in the film. Not to mention that Cher had a whopping 60 outfit changes throughout the film. *Cue envious attitude toward her closet* For anyone that can appreciate a nice wardrobe you will love this movie for the clothes alone. Each character has their own unique style that is reflected in each scene of the movie. Fashion is just about one of the only things taken seriously at Beverly Hills High School, that and shopping of course. I mean can you imagine anything worse than not having the PERFECT outfit on when you see your crush at the mall?! Cher’s materialistic attitude and “Daddy’s girl” mentality leads to crisis’s unimaginable to those of us who do not have the same privileges. One thing is for certain Cher would never be caught dead in public without her lipgloss and hair perfectly blow dried. While watching the movie there is a certain feeling of enjoyment to watch those with so much money act like complete fools. We take such pleasure out of laughing at Cher’s miniscule troubles because of the absurdity. “I don’t get it. Did my hair get flat? Did I stumble into some bad lighting? What’s wrong with me?” However, throughout this film, including all absurdities, each character displays a level of relatability. As wealthy and gifted as they are, they display the same emotions each of us can understand and relate to. Everyone I’m sure has had a different experience with high school, maybe you loved it, maybe you absolutely hated it. Despite this all, we all know what mean girls can feel like and what it’s like to have your first crush or even first love. It’s funny how much my emotions toward the characters shifted as I continued on watching the movie. It is obvious that the cast is much different than the average viewer yet there are lessons to be learned by any audience. This movie is one of my all time favorites and worth at least one watch (or 7). I hope that my opinion has swayed yours to take an hour or so off your busy day and Netflix it up. XOXO, Happy watching!! |
